Size Matters…for jewelry!

Have you ever wondered why the gauge, length, jewelry top, and flat disc (the back of the jewelry) matters?
When piercing, we use longer jewelry to allow room for swelling throughout the initial healing process. It is important to keep in mind the sizes and measurements when choosing jewelry. A longer post with a heavy top and smaller backing, will drag the jewelry down. This will affect the healing process and can cause migration (when the piercing starts to move from the initial spot). The weight needs to be distributed evenly throughout the whole piece, ensuring better stability for your piercing jewelry.
All piercings vary, and your anatomy is the biggest thing to take into consideration, that’s why it is significant to use the correct gauge and length.
Which brings us to downsizing jewelry. Once the swelling process has passed, it is time to downsize. Picture it this way- now the long jewelry looks even longer, and it is sticking out, looking a bit silly. The longer jewelry is now a potential problem because it is playing see-saw in the channel due to the constant movement. You are more likely to bump it (which can create a bump), get caught, or it could start migrating. Thus, a piercing that was beautifully done originally, will change angles. It is really important to follow your piercers (me 🤣) recommendations to come back around 4-6 weeks to swap out for a shorter post.
